What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo International Airport (or other entry point)
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's usually a separate counter before the main passport control queue.
2
Present your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), and your return ticket. Pay the visa fee in cash (USD or MZN). The officer will issue a visa sticker on the spot.
3
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, join the main passport control line. The officer will stamp you in. Keep the visa sticker intact — don't peel it off.

Frequently asked questions

The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. You can extend it once for an additional 30 days at the immigration office in Maputo or other major cities. The extension costs around 1,000–2,000 MZN (about $15–$30 USD).
Yes, but only at certain land border crossings. The main ones are Ressano Garcia (from South Africa), Machipanda (from Zimbabwe), and Namaacha (from Eswatini). Smaller crossings may not have the facility — check before you go.
You'll likely be denied the visa on arrival. Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. If you're overlanding, show a bus ticket or a written itinerary. A refundable flight booked and cancelled later is a common workaround.
Mozambique does offer an e-visa for some nationalities, but Uruguayans are not currently eligible. The visa on arrival is the only option for Uruguayans.
Yes, at all international airports: Maputo (MPM), Beira (BEW), Nampula (APL), Pemba (POL), and Vilankulo (VNX). The process is the same everywhere.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined around 1,000–2,000 MZN per day overstayed, and you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Always extend before your visa expires if you need more time.
