Frequently asked questions

Yes. All major land border crossings (like Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, and Belahiya) issue visas on arrival. The process is the same as at the airport — fill out the form, pay in cash, and get your sticker.
You can choose 15 days ($30), 30 days ($50), or 90 days ($125). The visa is valid from the date of issue. You cannot extend a 15-day visa — you must apply for a longer one initially if you plan to stay longer.
Yes, but only for 30-day and 90-day visas. Visit the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or a regional office). Extensions cost about $3 per day for the first 15 days, then $5 per day after that. Maximum total stay is 150 days per calendar year.
No problem. There are photo booths at Tribhuvan International Airport (near the visa counters) that cost about NPR 200. Land border crossings may also have them, but it's safer to bring your own.
Immigration wants proof you're leaving Nepal. If you're exiting overland, show a bus or train ticket. If you're hiking to Tibet, show a trekking permit or a letter from your guide. A screenshot of your onward transport booking works.
Not mandatory for entry, but strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from a remote trekking area can cost $10,000+. Hospitals in Kathmandu require upfront payment. Insurance covers these costs and trip cancellations.
Overstays are fined $5 per day for the first 30 days, then $10 per day after that. You'll need to pay at the immigration office before leaving. Overstaying more than 30 days can result in a blacklist.
