RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport (MPM) and other land borders. Pay in cash (USD or local currency) — have $50–$80 USD ready. The process takes 15–30 minutes at the airport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Mozambique. Airlines enforce this strictly — check your passport expiry before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they may check it before stamping your visa.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in Mozambique. Officers sometimes ask for it during visa-on-arrival processing — a printed booking confirmation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card statement showing available funds. Immigration may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay — a bank statement or cash stack answers that.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — no credit or debit cards. Bring USD or Mozambican meticals. USD bills must be in good condition (no tears, no older than 2009). Exact change speeds things up.
Visa on arrival is straightforward but expect a queue
At busy times (especially Maputo airport), the visa on arrival counter can have a line of 20-30 people. Budget an extra 30-45 minutes for this process. The counter is before passport control, so you won't be stuck in the main immigration queue until you have your visa.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa on arrival counter
After landing at Maputo (MPM), Beira (BEW), or other international airports, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. This is before the main passport control queue. At land borders, look for the visa office near the immigration hall.
2
Submit your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (usually given on the plane or at the border), and your passport photo. Pay the visa fee in cash (MZN or USD). The officer will process your application and issue a sticker.
3
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, join the main immigration queue. Present your passport with the new visa, and the officer will stamp you in. Keep your boarding pass and accommodation details handy in case they ask.
