Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Passport validity counts from arrival, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in India. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the e-Visa.
e-Visa is not for land borders
You can only enter India by air or sea with an e-Visa. If you plan to cross by land from Nepal or Bangladesh, you'll need a regular visa from an Indian embassy.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-Visa online
Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and passport scan, and pay the fee (around $25–$80 depending on duration). Processing takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive approval and print
Once approved, you'll get an email with your e-Visa. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. You'll show this at immigration.
3
Arrive at Indian airport
At major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai, head to the e-Visa counter. Present your passport, printed e-Visa, and return ticket. They'll stamp you in.
