Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Myanmar
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Myanmar. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Myanmar
Immigration officers at Yangon and Mandalay airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Without one, you may be refused entry or asked to buy a ticket on the spot.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel confirmation ready. Immigration sometimes asks where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry at least $300 USD or equivalent in cash or a credit card. Immigration rarely checks, but if asked, you need to show you're not working illegally.Recommended
14-day limit is strict
You cannot extend this visa-free stay. If you need more time, apply for an e-Visa (28 days, $50) before you travel. Overstaying even by one day incurs a fine and may complicate future travel.
Land borders are open
Vietnamese passport holders can enter Myanmar via land borders from Thailand. The same 14-day visa-free rule applies. Popular crossings: Mae Sot–Myawaddy, Mae Sai–Tachileik, and Ranong–Kawthaung.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airports, head to the 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Foreign Passports' queue. For land borders like Mae Sot-Myawaddy, proceed to the immigration booth.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months), completed arrival card (given on the plane or at the border), and your return/onward ticket if asked. No visa fee is charged.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 14-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '14 days' before walking away. If it's less, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel and proceed through customs. No customs declaration form is required for personal items.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Myanmar and re-enter, or apply for a visa in advance (e.g., e-Visa for 28 days). Overstaying incurs a fine of $3 per day and can lead to a ban.
Yes. The visa-free policy applies at all international land border crossings, including Mae Sot (Thailand), Tachileik, and Myawaddy. The same 14-day limit applies. Make sure your passport has a blank page for the stamp.
You may be denied entry. Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. If you don't have one, you might be allowed to buy a ticket on the spot at the airport, but it's risky. Always book before you fly.
If you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, no visa is needed. But if you plan to leave the transit area (e.g., to explore Yangon during a long layover), you must use the visa-free entry or have a visa. The 14-day limit still applies.
No. There is no fee for the 14-day visa-free entry. However, if you apply for an e-Visa (for 28 days), the cost is $50. No other charges apply at immigration.
Overstaying costs $3 per day, payable at the immigration office at the airport or land border before departure. You'll also get a warning. Repeated overstays can result in a ban from re-entering Myanmar for up to 1 year.
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism and short business visits (meetings, conferences). Any paid work, volunteering, or study requires a proper visa obtained in advance from a Myanmar embassy.
