Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Thailand
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Thailand. Immigration at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang checks this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding in Vietnam.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight within 60 days of arrival
Immigration officers at Thai airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or a flight to a third country within 60 days. Budget airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass in Vietnam.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host ready. A booking on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
At least 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
Thai immigration can request proof you have enough money for your stay. Carry cash (any major currency) or a bank statement showing at least 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family. In practice, this is rarely checked for short visits.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)TDAC
Optional online pre-registration
TDAC is a free 2-minute online form at tdac.immigration.go.th. Fill it in before your flight and you get a QR code that speeds you through the immigration queue at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Not mandatory, but saves time.Register for TDACOptional
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
TDAC saves time
Complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th before your flight. It gives you a QR code that speeds up immigration — no paper form needed.
60 days is generous
You get a full 60 days per entry — plenty for a long holiday. Just remember it's not extendable, so plan your exit date carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months), book your return flight, and save a screenshot of your hotel booking. Optionally complete the TDAC online.
2
Arrive at the airport in Thailand
At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Phuket, or Chiang Mai, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for foreign passports. Have your passport, boarding pass, and TDAC QR code (if you filled it) ready.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask about your stay duration, hotel, or onward ticket. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 60-day entry.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're free to enter Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry for Vietnamese passport holders is not extendable. You must leave Thailand before the 60 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a tourist visa (TR) at a Thai embassy before travel, which allows 60 days plus a possible 30-day extension.
Overstay costs 500 THB per day (about $14 USD), up to a maximum of 20,000 THB. You'll be fined at the airport when you leave. Overstaying more than 90 days can get you banned from re-entering Thailand for a year.
If you stay in the international transit area and your connecting flight is within 12 hours, no visa is needed. If you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), the 60-day visa-free entry applies.
Yes, there's no official limit on the number of visa-free entries. However, if you spend more than 180 days in Thailand in a calendar year, immigration may question your purpose and could deny entry. For frequent long stays, consider a tourist visa or a Non-Immigrant visa.
No, it's optional. But filling it out online before you fly can save you 10-15 minutes at the immigration queue. You'll get a QR code to show at the counter. If you skip it, you'll just fill out a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Thai immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than others, but it's not worth the risk.
Yes. The visa-free entry is for tourism, short business meetings, or transit only. For work, study, or long-term stays, you must apply for the appropriate visa (e.g., Non-Immigrant B for work, Non-Immigrant ED for study) at a Thai embassy before you travel.
