RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
South African passport holders need a visitor visa before traveling to Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal or submit a paper application at the Canadian visa office in Pretoria. Processing takes 2–4 weeks, so apply well ahead of your travel dates.Apply for visaRequired

Must be valid for the duration of your stay

Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary showing you leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Border officers may ask where you're staying on your first night.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements, a credit card, or cash showing you have enough money for your stay. No fixed amount is published, but around CAD $1,000–$2,000 per week is a safe benchmark for a tourist visit.Recommended
Start your visa application early
Processing can take 8 weeks or more during peak season (May–September). Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
Biometrics are mandatory
You must give fingerprints and a photo at a VAC in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban. Book your appointment as soon as you get the biometrics instruction letter — slots fill up fast.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, proof of funds, itinerary), and pay the CAD $100 fee. After submission, you'll get a biometrics instruction letter.
2
Give biometrics at a VAC
Book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) — there are offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Bring your passport, the biometrics letter, and the fee receipt. They'll take your fingerprints and photo. This step usually takes 15 minutes.
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing for South African applicants is around 4-8 weeks. You can check your application status online. If approved, you'll receive a visa counterfoil in your passport (either a sticker or a letter).
4
Arrive at a Canadian port of entry
When you land at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, or Montreal, go to the primary inspection kiosk. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, and funds. Answer honestly and briefly.
