South African passport holders need a visa to enter Finland. Apply at the Finnish embassy or visa application centre before you travel. This rule stays in place for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply at the Finnish embassy or visa centre
Submit your application at the Finnish embassy or a VFS Global centre in South Africa. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — apply well before your travel date. The visa costs €90 for adults, €45 for children 6–12, and is free for children under 6.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry stamps. The 3-month validity rule applies to the entire Schengen zone — not just Finland. Airlines check this before boarding, so verify your passport expiry date now.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa application and at border control
You need a confirmed return or onward ticket out of the Schengen area. Finnish border officers check this at passport control — a bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines flying into Helsinki are known to ask for proof of onward travel before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a signed invitation letter from a Finnish resident for your entire stay. Border officers may ask to see it during the visa interview or at passport control. A booking on Booking.com or Airbnb with a cancellation policy works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Show you have at least €50 per day of your stay — Finnish immigration uses this as a guideline. Bring the last 3 months of bank statements or a credit card with a sufficient limit. ATMs are widely available in Finland, but having cash or a card ready avoids delays.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
South African passport holders must get a Schengen visa before travelling to Finland. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your departure. Without a visa, you will be denied boarding at the airport.
Schengen rules apply
This visa allows you to visit Finland and all other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your total stay across the entire Schengen area counts, not just Finland.

What happens at the border

Gather documents
Collect your passport, photos, travel insurance, flight bookings, hotel confirmations, bank statements, and the completed visa application form. Make copies of everything.
2
Book an appointment
Go to the VFS Global website for Finland in South Africa. Choose your city (Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban) and book a slot. Appointments can fill up weeks ahead, so book early.
3
Attend the appointment
Show up at the VFS centre with all your documents. You'll submit your application, pay the fee, and give biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The whole thing takes about 30 minutes.
4
Wait for processing
Processing usually takes 15 calendar days. You can track your application online. If they need more documents, they'll contact you by email.
5
Collect your passport
Once approved, you'll get a notification. Pick up your passport from the VFS centre or have it couriered to you. The visa sticker will be inside.
6
Travel to Finland
At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, join the queue for non-EU passports. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask about your trip, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly and calmly.
