Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
South African passport holders need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands. Apply at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. The visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone, not just the Netherlands.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Netherlands. Schengen rules require the passport to be issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. Budget airlines check this before boarding — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a confirmed hotel booking for your entire stay or a signed invitation letter from your host in the Netherlands. Immigration may ask for this at the border, especially if you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you have at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask for this for short visits, but it's a formal Schengen requirement — carry proof just in case.Recommended
Apply early — slots fill up fast
VFS Global appointment slots for the Netherlands are often booked weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons (June–August and December). Check availability as soon as you know your travel dates.
Schengen area rules apply
This visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your first entry must be to the Netherlands, or the Netherlands must be your main destination.

What happens at the border

1
Check your passport validity
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months left from your entry date. If not, renew it first — this is the most common reason for rejection.
2
Complete the online application
Go to the Dutch embassy website or VFS Global portal. Fill in the Schengen visa form, print it, and sign it. You'll need to book an appointment at the same time.
3
Gather your documents
Collect: passport, printed application, flight booking, hotel confirmation, travel insurance certificate, bank statements, and passport photos. Make photocopies of everything.
4
Attend your visa appointment
Go to the VFS Global centre in Pretoria, Cape Town, or Durban (depending on your province). Bring all originals and copies. Pay the fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12). Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are taken on the spot.
5
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can take up to 45 days if more checks are needed. Track your application online using the reference number from VFS.
6
Collect your passport
Once approved, your passport with the visa sticker will be ready at the VFS centre. You can collect in person or pay for courier delivery.
7
Arrive in the Netherlands
At Schiphol Airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation details ready. The officer may ask about your plans — answer clearly and briefly.
