Transiting through Australia

Transit visa required

Zambian citizens generally need a Transit visa (subclass 771) to transit through Australia, even if staying airside, unless they hold a valid Australian visa or are eligible for a transit without visa (TWOV) under specific conditions.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Australian visa (including visitor, student, or permanent resident) do not need a separate transit visa.
  • Passengers with a confirmed onward ticket and who are nationals of countries listed in the Transit Without Visa (TWOV) arrangement may transit without a visa, but Zambia is not currently listed.
  • If you are transiting through Australia on your way to or from New Zealand and hold a valid New Zealand visa, you may be eligible for a transit visa waiver – check with the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Frequently asked questions

Processing times for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) vary. For Zambian applicants, it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Check the current processing times on the Home Affairs website, and apply as early as possible.
No. Zambia is not on the visa-waiver or eVisitor list. You must have a valid visa before you board your flight. Airlines will not let you board without one.
The base fee for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) is AUD 190. Additional costs may apply for biometrics (if required) and medical exams. Fees are paid online and are non-refundable.
Possibly. The Australian Department of Home Affairs may request biometrics (fingerprints and photo) as part of your application. If required, you'll be notified and must attend an appointment at a designated centre.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a new visa from outside Australia, or in limited circumstances, apply for a different visa while in Australia — but this is rare and not guaranteed.
You'll receive a written refusal with reasons. You can appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) in some cases, or reapply with new evidence. The application fee is not refunded.
Immigration officers may ask to see evidence of funds to cover your stay and return travel. It's wise to carry bank statements or a credit card, even if you weren't asked during the application.
