Zambian passport holders need a visa to enter the Netherlands for any purpose, including tourism. You must apply at the Dutch embassy or consulate before you travel. This requirement remains in effect for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa required
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your home country. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — submit your application no later than 6 months before travel. You will need a completed application form, passport photos, travel insurance covering €30,000, and proof of accommodation and funds.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. It must have at least two blank pages for visa stamps. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within the visa validity period. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country also works. Without it, you risk being refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a confirmed hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a signed invitation letter from your host in the Netherlands. Immigration may ask to see it during the visa interview or at the border. A booking on Booking.com or Airbnb works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have at least €55 per day of stay. Immigration officers rarely ask for this at the border, but the visa officer will check it during the application. A printed statement from the last 3 months is safest.Recommended
Apply Early — No Exceptions
Visa processing can take up to 45 days. Do not book flights or accommodation until you have the visa in hand. The embassy will not rush your application.
Schengen Rules Apply
The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area. A Dutch visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days. But you must enter through the Netherlands first.

What happens at the border

1
Gather Documents
Collect your passport (valid 6+ months), completed visa application form, passport photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, travel insurance, and bank statements. Make copies of everything.
2
Submit Application at Embassy
Visit the Dutch embassy in Lusaka (or the consulate if you're outside Lusaka) to submit your application and attend an interview. You'll need to book an appointment online first.
3
Pay Visa Fee
Pay the Schengen visa fee — currently €80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6. Fees are paid in local currency at the embassy's rate.
4
Wait for Processing
Processing takes 15 calendar days on average, but can stretch to 45 days during peak season. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
5
Collect Your Passport
Once approved, collect your passport with the visa sticker. Check the dates — the visa is valid only for the period shown. You'll get a sticker valid for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
6
Arrive in the Netherlands
At Schiphol Airport or any Schengen border, present your passport with the visa. The officer may ask about your plans, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly and calmly.
