What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau border checkpoint
You'll enter Macau via Macau International Airport (MFM), the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, or one of the ferry terminals (Macau Outer Harbour, Taipa). At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (if given on the plane or at the border), and your return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity and blank page.
3
Pay the visa-on-arrival fee
The officer will tell you the fee — typically around 100 MOP (about 12 USD) for a single-entry visa. Pay in cash (Macanese pataca, Hong Kong dollars, or Chinese yuan — have small bills). Keep the receipt.
4
Receive your visa and enter Macau
The officer will stamp or affix a visa sticker in your passport. You're then free to collect your luggage and exit the arrivals area. The visa is usually valid for up to 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

The standard single-entry visa on arrival costs around 100 MOP (about 12 USD). You can pay in Macanese pataca, Hong Kong dollars, or Chinese yuan — cash only. Keep the receipt.
The visa on arrival is typically valid for up to 30 days. The exact duration is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Extensions are possible but not guaranteed — you'd need to visit the Macau Immigration Department before your visa expires.
Extensions are possible but not automatic. You must apply in person at the Macau Immigration Department (Avenida da Praia Grande, Macau) before your current visa expires. There's a fee, and approval depends on your reason. It's easier to just leave and re-enter if you need more time.
You will likely be denied entry. Macau immigration strictly requires 6 months of validity from your date of entry. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes — you need a confirmed onward ticket out of Macau. It can be a flight, ferry, or bus ticket to your next destination. A screenshot or printed copy is fine.
Yes. The bridge has immigration checkpoints at both the Hong Kong and Macau ends. You'll go through Macau immigration there, and the visa-on-arrival process is the same as at the airport.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined (usually 500 MOP per day overstayed) and may be banned from re-entering Macau for a period. Always leave before your visa expires.
