Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for your India eVisa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before departure. The fee ranges from $25 to $80 USD depending on the visa type (tourist, business, medical). Approval usually arrives within 72 hours — print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity
Your Austrian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in India. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or card
Have access to at least $200 USD equivalent per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card is usually enough — officers rarely ask, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
eVisa only at airports and seaports
You cannot enter India by land (e.g., from Nepal or Pakistan) with an eVisa. Stick to the 28 designated airports or 5 seaports.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa PDF, passport scan, and flight tickets to your phone and email. If you lose your passport, these make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport info page. Pay the fee (around $25–$100 depending on duration). You'll get a confirmation email within 72 hours — print it or save the PDF.
2
Pack your documents
Before you leave, gather: printed eVisa approval, passport, return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance if you have it. Keep digital copies on your phone as backup.
3
Arrive at an Indian airport
eVisa holders can enter at 28 designated airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Goa. Don't try to enter at a land border — eVisa is only valid at airports and seaports.
4
Go through immigration
At immigration, join the 'eVisa' queue. Hand over your passport and eVisa printout. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport — you're in.
