Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ESTA visa waiver authorizationWithout an approved ESTA, you will not be allowed to board your flight to the US.
Apply online before travel
Australian citizens must obtain an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before boarding a flight to the US. The application is online at the official ESTA website (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/), costs US$40.27 ($4.00 processing + $36.27 authorization), and is often approved instantly, but allow up to 72 hours for processing.Required
Passport validityUS immigration requires your passport to be valid well beyond your departure date to ensure you can return home.
Valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your Australian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in the US. For a 90-day stay, ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months and 90 days from your arrival date.Required
Blank passport pagesA blank page is needed for the entry stamp; without it, you may be denied entry.
At least 1 blank page for entry stamp
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the US Customs and Border Protection officer to affix an entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticketCarrying a return ticket helps prove you intend to leave the US before your authorized stay ends.
Not always asked, but strongly recommended
While not a formal requirement for ESTA travelers, you may be asked to show proof of onward travel. It is recommended to have a return or onward ticket dated within your 90-day maximum stay.Recommended
Proof of fundsHaving proof of funds can help show you can support yourself during your visit.
Not required, but useful if questioned
There is no official minimum amount required, but you should be able to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay if asked by a border officer. This can include cash, credit cards, or bank statements.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou do not need to fill out any additional arrival form; the ESTA is sufficient.
Not required for ESTA travelers
No separate arrival declaration is required for Australian citizens entering the US under the Visa Waiver Program. The ESTA serves as your travel authorization. Not required
Visa extensionESTA does not allow extensions; you must leave the US within 90 days.
Not possible under ESTA
Your stay cannot be extended beyond 90 days. You must depart the US before your authorized period ends, or you will be in violation of the Visa Waiver Program. Not required
ESTA is not a visa — don't overstay
Overstaying your 90-day ESTA limit by even a day can get your authorization revoked and make future travel to the US difficult. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.
ESTA applies to land and sea arrivals too
If you're driving from Canada or Mexico, or arriving by cruise ship, you still need an approved ESTA. The same 90-day limit applies from the moment you cross the border.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for ESTA online
Go to the official ESTA website (esta.cbp.dhs.gov). Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few security questions. Pay the fee with a credit card. Approval is usually instant, but allow at least 72 hours.
2
Check your ESTA status
After applying, you'll get an email with your application ID. Log back into the site to confirm it says 'Authorization Approved'. Print or screenshot the approval page.
3
Pack your documents
Keep your passport, ESTA approval, return ticket, and first night's accommodation handy. A small folder or a phone screenshot folder works.
4
Arrive at US immigration
At the airport, follow signs for 'Foreign Passports' or 'Visitors'. Hand over your passport and answer the officer's questions (purpose of visit, where staying, how long). They'll stamp your passport with an admission stamp valid for up to 90 days.
