Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Iceland
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Iceland. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline might — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Icelandic border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. There's no fixed minimum, but around 100 EUR per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Schengen Area Rules Apply
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries (not just Iceland). If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries before arriving in Iceland, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Keflavik Airport
After landing at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are two queues: one for EU/EEA/Schengen citizens and one for all other passports. Join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready.
2
Border Control Interview
The border officer will ask a few questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer clearly and truthfully. They may ask to see your return ticket and proof of accommodation. The interview usually takes 1-2 minutes.
3
Passport Stamp & Entry
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days you're allowed to stay (usually 90). You're then free to collect your luggage and exit the arrivals area.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended for tourism or business purposes. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Contact the Directorate of Immigration in Reykjavik for details.
If you are transiting through Keflavik Airport and not leaving the international transit area, you do not need a visa. However, if you plan to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you must enter the Schengen area and the 90-day visa-free rule applies.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Icelandic border control. It's best to renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than others, but the 6-month rule is standard for Schengen countries.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. If you plan to work remotely, consider Iceland's remote work visa (long-term stay) which requires a separate application.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from the Schengen area for up to 5 years, and difficulty entering other Schengen countries in the future. It's taken seriously. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Directorate of Immigration immediately.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a permit), you must register with the National Registry within 7 days of arrival.
Not strictly required for entry, but strongly recommended. Iceland has high medical costs, and travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical expenses is a good idea. Some airlines may ask for proof of insurance at check-in.
