Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Sweden
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned exit from Sweden. This is a Schengen-wide rule — airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Norwegian enforce this at check-in too. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Sweden rarely asks for proof of accommodation at passport control, but have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. If you're staying with a friend, their address and phone number are enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Sweden doesn't have a fixed minimum amount, but officers may ask how you'll fund your trip. A credit card or bank statement showing a few thousand SEK is sufficient. Carry a card with a visible balance.Recommended
90-day rule applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just Sweden. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Sweden. If it expires sooner, you may be denied boarding or entry. Check your passport's expiry date well before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport, return ticket, accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Arlanda or other Swedish airport
At Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), Göteborg Landvetter (GOT), or other airports, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU arrivals. Queues can be 15–45 minutes during peak times.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of return. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're now in Sweden.
