Brazilian passport holders can visit Japan for tourism or business without a visa for up to 90 days. This visa-free arrangement is in effect for 2026 and covers most short-term stays. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to be valid for the full length of your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended — enforcement varies by officer
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai may ask for proof of onward travel. Some ask, some don't. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready to avoid delays.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended — have hotel bookings or host details ready
Officers occasionally ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a friend's address and phone number in Japan is enough. Keep it accessible on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended — show you can support yourself
You may be asked how you'll fund your trip. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) for a short stay usually satisfies the officer.Recommended

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first night hotel booking, and optionally register on Visit Japan Web. Save everything as screenshots on your phone.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' — there are separate queues for visa-free travellers.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask your purpose of stay, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day visitor status.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed to customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you used Visit Japan Web, you can use the QR code lane for faster processing.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering.
Not officially required, but it's wise to have a credit card or some cash (JPY) available. Immigration officers rarely ask, but if they do, showing a card or a few hundred dollars in cash is usually enough.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6 months are counted from your arrival date in Japan.
No, it's optional. But it's free and saves you time — you fill in your details online before flying, then use a QR code at the airport to skip the paper form queue. Highly recommended.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work (including remote work for a foreign company) or study. You need a proper visa for those activities.
You cannot extend the visa-free stay. You must leave Japan and re-enter after a period outside the country. For longer stays, apply for a visa (e.g., work, student, or long-term tourist visa) at the Japanese embassy in Brazil before traveling.
If you're staying in the international transit area and not passing through immigration, you generally don't need a visa. But if you need to enter Japan (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), the same visa-free rules apply — up to 90 days for Brazilians.
