Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Swiss passport only needs to be valid for the period you intend to stay in Turkey. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Turkey
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket at passport control. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from your host in Turkey. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least 50 USD per day of your stay — cash, credit card, or bank statement. Border officers seldom check, but it's a legal requirement.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Turkish immigration will deny entry if your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date. Check your passport now — if it's close, renew it before booking flights.
90-day limit resets after 180 days
You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you leave after 60 days, you can return for another 30 days within the same 180-day window. But once you've used 90 days, you must stay out for 90 days before re-entering.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Turkish border
At Istanbul Airport (IST) or any other entry point, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will scan your passport, take a photo, and stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 1–3 minutes.
2
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
3
Keep documents handy
While not always asked, keep your return ticket and accommodation booking accessible on your phone. Some officers may request them, especially if you're a first-time visitor or arriving from a high-risk country.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a residence permit (ikamet) from the Turkish immigration office before your 90 days expire — but that's a separate process and not guaranteed.
Overstaying in Turkey is taken seriously. You'll be fined per day overstayed (around 50–100 TRY per day, but can vary). You may also be banned from re-entering Turkey for a period — typically 3 months to 1 year for minor overstays, longer for serious ones. Always leave before your stamp expires.
No. If you're staying airside (not passing through immigration) and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need to enter visa-free as a Swiss passport holder — same 90-day rule applies.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot take up employment or engage in paid work. For work, you need a work permit and a work visa, which your Turkish employer must arrange before you arrive.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Turkish immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
No. Turkey does not require an arrival declaration or online pre-registration for Swiss passport holders. You just show your passport at the border.
No, it's not a legal requirement. But if you're unlucky enough to need medical care, a hospital stay can easily cost €200–500 per day. Travel insurance is cheap insurance against that risk.
