Chinese passport holders need a visa to visit Canada in 2026. You must apply and receive approval before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option for Chinese citizens. Start the process at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Chinese passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Canada. Canadian immigration does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Visitor visa application
Apply for a Canada Visitor Visa (TRV) before travel
Chinese passport holders need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. Apply online through the official IRCC portal at least 4–6 weeks before your trip — processing times vary. You will need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in China.Apply for visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers will ask for a return flight or onward ticket to a third country. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the primary inspection kiosk.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a signed letter from your host in Canada with their address and contact number. Officers may ask where you are staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the visit
Bring recent bank statements or a credit card statement showing sufficient funds. There is no fixed minimum, but having at least CAD 2,000–3,000 for a short trip is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply early — no last-minute options
There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA for Chinese citizens. You must have a visa sticker in your passport before you board any flight to Canada. Processing can take 6 weeks or more, so start early.
Biometrics are mandatory for all applicants aged 14–79
You must give your fingerprints and photo in person at a Visa Application Centre. This applies to all first-time applicants and most renewals. Book your appointment as soon as you submit your online application.

What happens at the border

1
Gather your documents
Collect your passport, bank statements, flight itinerary, hotel booking, travel insurance, and any invitation letters. Scan everything as PDFs (under 4 MB each).
2
Complete the online application
Go to the official IRCC website and fill out the visitor visa application (IMM 5257). You'll need to create a GCKey account. Answer all questions honestly.
3
Pay the fees and book biometrics
Pay the CAD 100 visa fee plus CAD 85 biometrics fee online. Then book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Chengdu.
4
Attend the biometrics appointment
Go to the VAC on your appointment date. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and payment receipt. They'll take your fingerprints and photo. This takes about 15 minutes.
5
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 4–6 weeks. You can check your application status online through your GCKey account. Do not book flights until you receive approval.
6
Receive your visa and travel
If approved, you'll get a visa sticker in your passport (either mailed to you or picked up at the VAC). Carry all supporting documents when you fly — immigration at Toronto Pearson or Vancouver International may ask to see them.
