Chinese passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to the Netherlands. Apply at a Dutch embassy or consulate in China; there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks, so plan accordingly.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (short-stay)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your home country. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — book your appointment early. You'll need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) in person.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry/exit stamps. The 3-month validity rule applies to the entire Schengen zone — not just the Netherlands. Airlines check this before boarding, so verify your passport's expiry date before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. The ticket must show you leave the Schengen zone before your visa expires. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Have a printed hotel reservation or a signed invitation letter from your host in the Netherlands. Immigration may ask to see it at the border. If staying with a friend, they need to register you with their local municipality.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry bank statements from the last 3 months showing at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to prove you can cover your expenses without working. Credit cards alone don't count.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
You cannot board a flight to the Netherlands without a valid Schengen visa. Processing can take 2–4 weeks, and longer during peak season. Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in the Netherlands, not from the day you apply. If it expires sooner, renew it first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa
Submit your application at the Dutch embassy or consulate in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Chengdu, or at a VFS Global visa application centre. Book an appointment online, fill out the form, pay the fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6), and attend an in-person interview. Processing averages 15 calendar days.
2
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, travel insurance, bank statements, and a cover letter explaining your trip. Make copies. If employed, include a no-objection letter from your employer.
3
Attend the visa interview
Arrive at your appointment with all original documents and photocopies. You'll be fingerprinted (if over 12) and asked about your travel plans. Answer honestly. The interview takes about 15–20 minutes.
4
Wait for processing
After the interview, your passport is held at the embassy. Track the status online. Once approved, you'll be notified to collect your passport or have it couriered. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
5
Arrive in the Netherlands
At Schiphol Airport or another entry point, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport with visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer may ask questions; keep answers short and consistent with your application. You'll get a stamp allowing up to 90 days stay within a 180-day period.
