Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a tourist visa or working holiday visa) before you travel. Overstaying can get you fined, detained, or banned from re-entry.
Not routinely, but immigration officers can ask. It's wise to have a credit card or a bank statement showing you can support yourself (around ¥100,000 per month is a safe benchmark). Most travellers are never asked.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for visa-free travellers.
No. Each entry resets the 90-day clock, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. If you leave and come back the same day, they might deny entry. Best to space out trips.
No, it's optional. But it saves time — you skip the paper forms and use a QR code instead. It's free and takes 5 minutes to fill out online before your flight.
Overstaying is a serious offence. You could be fined, detained, and deported. You may also be banned from re-entering Japan for several years. Leave before your 90 days are up.
If you're staying airside and leaving within 72 hours, you generally don't need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need a visa or visa-free entry. Check with your airline.
