Danish passport holders need a visa to enter Australia in 2026. The most common option for short visits is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which you apply for online before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA (Australia) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
Apply for your ETA through the official Australian ETA app — the website version is a third-party service that charges extra. The app costs $20 AUD and approval usually comes through in seconds. You must have a valid ETA before boarding your flight to Australia.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Original passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your planned departure date from Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the border. A flight booking out of Australia to any destination works — it does not have to be back to Denmark.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Keep a printed or digital copy of your first night's hotel reservation or a letter from your Australian host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or credit card showing sufficient funds
Carry bank statements or a credit card statement showing you can support yourself during your stay. There is no fixed minimum amount, but around $1,000 AUD per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply for the ETA early
While most ETAs are approved in minutes, some applications get flagged for manual review and can take up to 24 hours. Apply at least a few days before your flight to avoid stress.
SmartGate saves time
At major Australian airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth), Danish e-passport holders can use SmartGate kiosks. No need to queue for an officer — just scan and go.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or use the official ETA app. Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and answer a few questions. Pay the fee (around AUD 20). Approval is usually instant, but can take up to 24 hours.
2
Check your passport validity
Make sure your Danish passport has at least 6 months left from the day you arrive in Australia. If it doesn't, renew it before you apply for the ETA.
3
Book your flights and accommodation
Book a return or onward ticket. Also book your first night's accommodation. Keep confirmations handy — digital copies on your phone are fine.
4
Arrive at the airport
At check-in, the airline will verify your ETA is linked to your passport. They may also ask to see your return ticket. Board your flight.
5
Go through Australian immigration
At the airport in Australia, use the SmartGate kiosk if available (Danish e-passports are eligible). Scan your passport, answer the questions, and get your entry stamp. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) before you travel. It's a quick online application, not a full visa. Apply at least a few days before your flight.
The official fee is about AUD 20. Only use the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or the official ETA app — third-party sites often charge extra fees.
Up to 3 months per visit. The ETA is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, and you can enter multiple times during that period.
No, the ETA cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa (like a Visitor Visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires.
Renew your passport first, then apply for the ETA. The ETA is linked to your passport number, so a new passport means a new ETA.
Yes. Australian immigration expects you to have a booked return or onward ticket. Airlines may also check this before letting you board.
Yes. Danish e-passports are eligible for SmartGate. It's faster than the regular queue — just scan your passport and answer a few questions on the kiosk.
