Danish passport holders need an e-visa to enter New Zealand. You must apply online before you travel. This requirement is in place for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)You need this electronic travel authority before you fly – it's not a visa but a mandatory pre-travel clearance.
Visa waiver for Danish citizens
Danish passport holders must obtain an NZeTA before boarding a flight to New Zealand. Apply online or via the official mobile app. The NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years for multiple visits.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry – if it's too close, renew it before your trip.
At least 6 months beyond departure
Your Danish passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from New Zealand. Ensure your passport meets this before applying for the NZeTA.Required
Blank passport pagesMake sure you have a completely blank page – not just a page with some space.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for entry stamps. This is a standard requirement for border control.Required
Return or onward ticketIt's wise to have this ready – immigration can ask for it at the border.
Proof of departure
Although not always checked, you may be asked to show a return or onward ticket proving you will leave New Zealand before your permitted stay ends. Carry a printed or digital copy.Recommended
Proof of sufficient fundsHave bank statements or a credit card handy – they might ask how you'll support yourself.
Financial evidence
You may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay in New Zealand. There is no fixed amount, but you should have access to at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay, or NZD 400 if accommodation is prepaid.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou'll need to fill this out online before you land – it's quick and essential.
New Zealand Traveller Declaration
You must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before arriving. This is a digital form that can be submitted up to 24 hours before departure. It covers customs, biosecurity, and health information.Required
Visa extensionYou can't extend your visit – plan your trip within the allowed time.
Not possible for NZeTA visitors
The NZeTA allows a stay of up to 3 months (or 6 months if you are a UK citizen – but you are Danish, so 3 months). This stay cannot be extended while in New Zealand. If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa before travelling. Not required
Biosecurity is strict
New Zealand has some of the world's toughest biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plants, animal products, camping gear, or sports equipment. Fines start at NZD 400 and can go much higher. Bins are available before the checkpoint to dispose of undeclared items.
Apply early
E-visa processing can take 20–30 days. Apply at least 2 months before your trip. Last-minute applications are rarely approved in time.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for an e-visa online
Go to the Immigration New Zealand website and complete the online e-visa application. You'll need your passport details, travel plans, and a digital photo. Pay the fee (around NZD 211 as of 2026). Processing usually takes 20–30 days.
2
Receive your e-visa approval
You'll get an email with your e-visa approval letter. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. The e-visa is linked to your passport electronically.
3
Prepare your documents for arrival
Before you fly, gather: your passport, e-visa approval letter, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch airport
At immigration, present your passport and e-visa. The officer may ask about your plans, funds, and return ticket. Answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor visa valid for up to 3 months.
5
Clear biosecurity
New Zealand has strict biosecurity. Declare any food, plants, animal products, or outdoor gear. Failure to declare can result in a fine of NZD 400 or more. Bins are available before the checkpoint.
