Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended but not always checked
Immigration officers at Narita and Haneda may ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer and airline — budget carriers often check at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Immigration rarely asks for hotel bookings, but having your first night's reservation printed or on your phone covers you if questioned. A simple hostel or hotel confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Officers seldom request bank statements for short stays, but carrying a credit card and some cash (around ¥50,000–¥100,000) shows you can support yourself. ATMs at 7-Eleven and Japan Post are reliable.Recommended
