Danish passport holders need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to visit Canada in 2026 — not a full visa. The eTA is quick and cheap, but you must apply online before you fly. No visa-free entry without it.

Apply for Canada eVisaOnly required when arriving by air; not needed for land/sea entry from the US. Linked electronically to your passport — no printout required.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)An eTA is an electronic entry permit linked to your passport. You must have it before boarding a flight to Canada.
Visa-exempt entry permit
Danish citizens do not need a traditional visa for Canada, but must obtain an eTA before flying. Apply online at the official eTA website (https://eta.cic.gc.ca/). The eTA costs CAD $7 and is usually approved within minutes, though it can take a few days if additional documents are requested.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport's expiry date – it must not expire within 6 months of your arrival in Canada.
At least 6 months at entry
Your Danish passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry into Canada.Required
Blank passport pagesThe border officer will stamp your passport – a blank page is needed for that.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticketHaving a booked flight out of Canada helps show you intend to leave before your authorized stay ends.
May be requested
Although not always required, Canadian border officials may ask to see proof of onward travel. It is strongly recommended to have a return or onward ticket.Recommended
Proof of fundsCarry bank statements or a credit card to prove you can support yourself during your visit.
May be requested
You may be asked to show that you have sufficient funds for your stay. No specific amount is set, but you should be able to cover accommodation, living expenses, and return transportation.Recommended
Maximum stayYou must leave Canada before the 180-day limit expires – extensions are not available for this visa-free stay.
Up to 180 days
As a Danish citizen with an eTA, you may stay in Canada for up to 180 days per entry. This period is not extendable.Required
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any additional arrival form – just present your passport and eTA.
Not required
No separate arrival declaration is required for Danish citizens entering Canada. Not required
eTA required — no exceptions
Danish passport holders cannot board a flight to Canada without an approved eTA. There's no visa-free entry without it. Apply online at eta.cic.gc.ca — it's cheap and fast, but don't leave it to the last minute.
Biometrics not required for eTA
Unlike a full visitor visa, the eTA application doesn't require biometrics (fingerprints or photo). You only need your passport and a credit card.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eTA online
Go to eta.cic.gc.ca and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, an email address, and a credit card for the CAD $7 fee. Most applications are approved in minutes — you'll get an email confirmation. If extra documents are requested, it can take a few days.
2
Check your eTA status before flying
Once approved, your eTA is electronically linked to your passport. Double-check that the name and passport number on the approval email match your passport exactly. If anything's off, contact IRCC before your flight.
3
Arrive at the Canadian border
At the airport, go to the 'Visitors' queue and present your passport at the primary inspection kiosk. The border officer may ask about your plans — answer clearly. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready if asked.

Frequently asked questions

No, you need an eTA, not a full visa. Denmark is on the visa-waiver list, so you can apply for an eTA online at eta.cic.gc.ca. It costs CAD $7 and is usually approved within minutes.
You can stay up to 180 days per entry. The eTA itself is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
No, the eTA doesn't allow extensions. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a visitor record before your 180 days are up — but that's not guaranteed. Overstaying without permission can affect future travel.
If your eTA is refused, you can apply for a visitor visa instead. This is a full visa application with more scrutiny — you'll need to provide financial documents, travel history, and possibly attend an interview. Processing takes weeks, so apply well in advance.
No. An eTA only allows tourism, visiting family, or business meetings. For work or study, you need a separate work permit or study permit. Working on an eTA is illegal and can get you deported.
No, Danish passport holders don't need a transit visa if you stay airside and have a confirmed onward ticket. But if you leave the airport or go through immigration, you'll need an eTA or visitor visa.
