Must cover your entire stay
Your Finnish passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Sri Lanka. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Bandaranaike International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have at least $50 USD per day available in cash, card, or traveler's cheques. Immigration rarely checks this for Finnish passport holders, but it is safer to have proof ready.Recommended
Visa on arrival is free for 30 days
Finnish passport holders don't pay a fee for the standard 30-day tourist visa on arrival. If you need longer, you'll pay at the counter.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you'll be turned away. No exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport or seaport
At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after baggage claim. At other entry points (e.g., Mattala airport or Colombo port), look for the immigration counter.
2
Fill out the arrival form
You'll receive a small white card on the plane or at the counter. Fill in your personal details, flight number, and address in Sri Lanka. Keep your passport handy.
3
Present documents at the visa counter
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card, and return ticket (if asked). The officer will process your visa on arrival — typically takes 5–10 minutes.
4
Pay the visa fee (if applicable)
As of 2025, the visa on arrival for Finns is free for stays up to 30 days. If you're staying longer (up to 90 days), you'll need to pay a fee at the counter — around $35–50 USD depending on duration. Credit cards are accepted.
5
Receive your visa sticker and proceed
The officer will affix a visa sticker to your passport. Check the validity dates. Then head to the baggage claim and customs.
