Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date from South Africa. Have at least two blank visa pages. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from South Africa
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Budget airlines like FlySafair and Kulula may deny boarding without one. Have a printed copy or digital booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to show you have at least 3,000 ZAR (about $160 USD) per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit is fine. I've never been asked, but keep it handy.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter South Africa. If it expires sooner, you will be denied entry. Check your passport now and renew if needed.
Yellow fever vaccine required if coming from Ghana
If you are flying directly from Ghana, you must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Without it, you may be quarantined or denied entry. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
When you land at any South African airport (like OR Tambo in Johannesburg or Cape Town International), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Join the queue for non-SADC nationals.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any other documents the officer asks for (like your return ticket or accommodation booking). They will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After the immigration officer stamps your passport, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter South Africa.
