Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival application
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at any major Indonesian airport or seaport. Pay the fee in cash (USD or IDR) — $35 USD for 30 days. Have a printed return ticket and hotel booking ready at the counter.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Indonesia
Indonesian immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline and turned away at immigration. No exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Jakarta, Bali, and other entry points always ask for a return or onward ticket. If you don't have one, you'll be directed to buy one on the spot or denied entry. Budget airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask for your hotel booking or a letter of invitation from your host. Have a printed copy or a screenshot on your phone ready — they rarely check deeply, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Officers sometimes ask to see proof you can support yourself during your stay. Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a recent bank statement on your phone. Credit cards are not always accepted as proof.Recommended
Cash only for VoA
The Visa on Arrival fee must be paid in cash (IDR) before immigration. There are no ATMs before immigration. Carry 500,000 IDR in small bills. Some airports have currency exchange counters, but rates are poor.
VoA is not extendable
If you think you might need more than 30 days, apply for a B211A social visa before you travel. It allows up to 60 days and can be extended.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Indonesian airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'VoA' counters. These are before the immigration desks.
2
Pay the VoA fee
Hand over your passport and 500,000 IDR cash. You'll get a receipt and a small sticker. Keep the receipt.
3
Proceed to immigration
Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Present your passport, the VoA sticker, and your boarding pass. You may be asked for your return ticket and accommodation.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then go through customs. You're free to enter Indonesia.
