Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Sri Lanka. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Visa on arrival
Available at Colombo Bandaranaike Airport
You can get a visa on arrival at Colombo Airport for $35–$50 USD depending on the duration. Pay in cash (USD, EUR, GBP, or LKR) — there's an ATM but it sometimes runs out of money. The queue can take 20–40 minutes.Apply onlineRequired
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Sri Lankan immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the counter. If you don't have one, they may deny entry or make you buy one on the spot. A cheap onward bus or flight to India works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for this, but having a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host speeds things up. If you're staying with friends, get their name and address ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers occasionally ask how much cash you're carrying. Have at least $100 USD per day of your stay in cash or card statements. ATMs are everywhere in Colombo but unreliable outside cities.Recommended
Visa on arrival is free and fast
Hong Kong passport holders get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at no cost. The process takes about 5-10 minutes at the airport. No need to apply online or pay anything in advance.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the gate.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There's a dedicated counter for visa-on-arrival passengers. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready.
2
Fill out the arrival card
You'll be given a small arrival card on the plane or at the immigration hall. Fill in your personal details, flight number, and accommodation address. Keep it with your passport.
3
Present documents at the visa counter
Hand over your passport, arrival card, and any requested documents. The officer will process your visa on the spot. No fee is charged for Hong Kong passport holders.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day tourist visa. Check the stamp says '30 days' before walking away. If you need longer, ask about extensions at the Department of Immigration in Colombo.
5
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and walk through customs. There's nothing special to declare for most tourists. Exit into the arrivals hall.
