Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hong Kong passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but your airline may enforce their own policy — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City, Cancún, and other airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to a third country ready. A bus ticket to Belize or Guatemala also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Mexico with their address is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Mexico does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but carrying a credit card and a bank statement showing a few hundred USD in your account covers the question. I've never been asked for this at Cancún or Mexico City, but it's smart to have it.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive in Mexico, not your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew before you go.
Overstaying is costly
The 180-day stay is not extendable. Overstaying can lead to fines and a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Mexican immigration
At any Mexican airport (Cancún, Mexico City, etc.), follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign visitors.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any requested documents (return ticket, accommodation). The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the number of days granted (usually 180). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect luggage and proceed
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to press a button for a random baggage check — this is normal.
