Apply early — don't risk it
While most ETAs are approved quickly, some applications get flagged for manual review and can take days. Apply at least a week before your flight to avoid last-minute stress.
Biosecurity is serious
Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Declare any food, wood, plants, or animal products on your incoming passenger card. Fines for undeclared items start at AUD 2,664 (around USD 1,800).

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or use the official ETA app. Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and answer a few questions. Pay the fee (around AUD 20). You'll usually get a decision within minutes to a few days.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save digital copies of your ETA confirmation, passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them together in a folder on your phone.
3
Arrive at the airport in Australia
At immigration, join the queue for non-citizens. Have your passport ready. The officer will scan it — your ETA is linked electronically. They may ask about your trip, accommodation, and return plans. Answer clearly.
4
Collect your luggage and clear customs
After immigration, collect your bags and proceed to customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity rules. Fines for not declaring can be steep.

Transiting through Australia

Transit visa required

Icelandic passport holders transiting through Australia generally need a Transit visa (subclass 771) unless they hold an ETA or another valid Australian visa. However, if you are transiting airside for less than 8 hours and do not need to pass through immigration, you may be eligible for a transit waiver, but it is not guaranteed. Always check with the airline and the Department of Home Affairs.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Australian visa (including ETA) do not need a separate transit visa.
  • Passengers who are citizens of certain countries may be exempt, but Iceland is not on the usual exemption list.
  • If you have a confirmed onward ticket and stay airside, you may be allowed to transit without a visa for up to 8 hours, but this is at the discretion of the border officer.
