Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Some airlines still enforce the 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai frequently ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer, but having one printed or on your phone avoids delays. A refundable ticket or a cheap flight to Seoul works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having it can mean extra questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing enough funds for your trip. There is no fixed amount, but around ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) for a short stay is a safe benchmark. Officers almost never ask, but it covers you if they do.Recommended

No visa needed for 90 days
Italian passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. No application, no fee, no embassy visit. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket.

After immigration, pick up your checked bags, then proceed through customs. You may be asked to declare items. Green channel if nothing to declare, red if you have restricted goods.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Japan and re-enter (though doing this repeatedly may raise questions). For longer stays, apply for a visa before travel.
If you're staying in the international transit area and not passing through immigration, no visa is needed. But if you want to leave the airport, you'll need to enter Japan visa-free (if eligible) or have a transit visa. Check with your airline.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. If you have a valid visa in an old passport, bring both passports.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot engage in paid work or enroll in a course. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa.
No, it's optional. You can still fill out a paper arrival card on the plane. But using Visit Japan Web (free at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) lets you pre-register your details and skip the paper form, which can save time at immigration.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, and deported. Future visits to Japan could be denied. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Immigration Bureau before your visa expires.
Usually no, as long as you're with the cruise ship and staying less than 90 days. But check with your cruise line — some ports may have specific requirements. You'll typically go through immigration as a group.
