Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Thailand
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you leave Thailand. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied at the gate. Immigration at Suvarnabhumi also enforces this strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Thailand within 60 days
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 60 days. Budget airlines like AirAsia and Nok Air often check this at check-in too. A cheap throwaway ticket to a neighboring country works if your plans are flexible.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printed hotel confirmation or a friend's address with their phone number is enough. I've been asked maybe 1 in 5 times — better to have it ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
The official requirement is 20,000 THB in cash or traveler's checks per person, or 40,000 THB per family. In practice, immigration rarely asks, but if they do and you can't show it, they can deny entry. Cash in Thai baht or major currencies works.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)Thailand Digital Arrival Card — a free 2-minute online pre-registration at tdac.immigration.go.th. Not mandatory, but gets you through the immigration queue faster.
Optional online pre-registration for faster immigration
TDAC is a free online form at tdac.immigration.go.th where you enter your passport, flight, and accommodation details before arrival. It's not mandatory — you can still fill in the paper form on the plane — but having the QR code from TDAC gets you through the immigration queue faster at major airports.Register on TDACOptional
Overstay penalties are real
Overstaying even one day costs 500 THB per day. Over 90 days gets you a 1-year ban. Set a reminder on your phone to leave before your 60 days are up.
TDAC saves time
Fill out the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at https://tdac.immigration.go.th before you fly. It's optional but can cut your immigration queue time significantly.
Travel insurance is cheap insurance
A basic travel insurance policy costs around $20-30 for a week. A single hospital visit in Thailand can cost $500+. Get insured before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Thai immigration
At any international airport in Thailand (BKK, DMK, HKT, CNX, etc.), follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) to the officer. They may ask for your return ticket or accommodation – have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 60-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '60 days' before you walk away. Keep the departure card (if given) in your passport.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for goods over the limit.

Frequently asked questions

No, this visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Thailand and re-enter (visa run) or apply for a different visa before you travel, such as a tourist visa (60 days, extendable by 30 days) or a special tourist visa (STV, up to 90 days). Overstaying costs 500 THB per day and can get you banned.
You will be denied entry. The rule is strict: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Renew your passport before you travel.
No, there is no official requirement to show bank statements or cash for visa-free entry. However, immigration officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds if they suspect you might overstay or work illegally. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash is a good backup.
No, it's optional. But filling it out online before you fly (free at https://tdac.immigration.go.th) can speed up your entry because you skip the paper arrival card queue. If you don't do it, you'll fill out a paper card on the plane or at immigration.
No. Visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) or study. For work, you need a work permit and appropriate visa. For study, get a Non-Immigrant ED visa.
Overstay costs 500 THB per day (about $14 USD). If you overstay more than 90 days, you get a 1-year ban. More than 1 year, a 3-year ban. Always leave before your stamp expires. If you need more time, do a visa run to a neighboring country (e.g., Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia) and re-enter.
If you are transiting and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. If you need to enter Thailand (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you can use the 60-day visa-free entry as long as you meet the requirements.
