Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before departure
India requires a valid eVisa for Lao passport holders. Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before travel — processing takes up to 72 hours. Fees range from $25 to $80 USD depending on visa type and duration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in India. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page separately — immigration officers at Delhi and Mumbai sometimes ask for it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration at all Indian airports checks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Airlines also verify this at check-in — without one, you may be denied boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Immigration officers at major airports like Delhi and Mumbai occasionally ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or card
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a credit/debit card with available balance. Immigration rarely asks, but if you're flagged for secondary inspection, they may request proof of financial means.Recommended
eVisa is not for all purposes
The eVisa is for tourism, business, or medical visits only. It does not allow paid employment, journalism, or long-term study. If your purpose is different, apply for a regular visa at the Indian embassy.
Keep your eVisa approval handy
Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. Immigration officers may ask to see it before you board your flight to India.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa Online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-sized photo and a scanned copy of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25–$80 depending on duration and nationality). Submit and wait for approval — usually 3–5 business days.
2
Receive eVisa Approval
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval letter. Print it out and keep a digital copy on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number — no sticker needed.
3
Arrive at Indian Immigration
At the airport, head to the 'e-Visa' counter (not the regular visa queue). Present your passport and eVisa approval letter. The officer will scan your fingerprints and take a photo. You'll get a stamped entry permit valid for 60 days.
4
Complete Arrival Declaration
Fill out the Indian Customs Arrival Card (given on the plane or at the airport). Declare any cash over $5,000 or goods worth more than $500. Keep the card with your passport until you exit customs.

No. The eVisa is not extendable. You must leave India before the 60-day period ends. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type from an Indian embassy before travel.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your photo doesn't meet specs or your passport has less than 6 months validity. You can reapply after fixing the issue. There's no appeal process.
Not usually. Immigration officers rarely ask for bank statements or cash. But it's smart to have a credit card or some cash (around $200) just in case.
Yes, the eVisa is valid at 28 designated airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. It's also valid at 5 major seaports. Check the official list before booking.
Overstaying can result in a fine of about $50–$100 per day, and you may be banned from re-entering India for a period. Always leave before the 60 days are up.
If you're transiting through an Indian airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need an eVisa or a transit visa.
