What happens at the border

Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents listed above. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity and one blank page. Get your photo taken at a professional studio.

Submit your application at the embassy or consulate
Take your completed application form and all supporting documents to the Embassy of Japan in Colombo (or the consulate if you live outside Colombo). You must apply in person — no mail-in applications. The embassy is at 20 Gregory's Road, Colombo 07. Office hours are 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Monday to Friday.

Pay the visa fee
Pay the visa fee at the time of submission. Fees vary by visa type — single-entry is usually around 3,000 JPY (approx. 6,000 LKR). Check the embassy website for the exact amount in LKR. Payment is typically in cash.

Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 5–10 working days. You'll be given a receipt with a collection date. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.

Collect your passport
Return to the embassy on the specified date with your receipt to collect your passport. Check the visa sticker carefully — make sure your name, dates, and visa type are correct.

Arrive in Japan and go through immigration
At the airport (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, etc.), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport, visa, and completed Visit Japan Web QR code ready. The officer may ask about your itinerary and accommodation. Answer clearly. You'll get a landing permission sticker in your passport.
