If you think you might want to stay longer, plan for a visa run or adjust your itinerary. Overstaying can result in fines and potential issues with future travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email. Pay the fee online (around $35–$50 USD depending on the processing speed).
2
Receive ETA approval
Approval is usually emailed within 24–72 hours. Check your spam folder. Print a copy or save it on your phone — you'll need to show it at check-in and possibly at immigration.
3
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'E-Visa/ETA' counters. Have your passport, ETA approval, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport, typically granting a 30-day stay.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After clearing immigration, collect your bags and walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. Then you're free to exit.

Frequently asked questions

The standard tourist ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days. It's not extendable, so if you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa type.
The official ETA fee is around $35–$50 USD, depending on the processing speed you choose. Be careful of third-party websites that charge extra — use only https://eta.gov.lk/.
Typically 24–72 hours. It's wise to apply at least a week before your flight to avoid any delays. The official site offers a faster option for an extra fee.
There is an on-arrival facility at Bandaranaike International Airport, but it's not guaranteed and can involve long queues. It's much safer to have the ETA approved before you fly.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Lithuania isn't one, so you won't need it for direct travel. Check if you're transiting through a risk country.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline and entry by Sri Lankan immigration. Renew your passport before applying for the ETA.
The standard tourist ETA is single-entry. If you leave Sri Lanka (e.g., to the Maldives) and come back, you'll need a new ETA.
