Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the Maldives. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by immigration, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Maldives
Immigration officers at Velana International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or resort booking confirmation
Most visitors arrive with a resort or guesthouse booking, and immigration may ask for it — especially if you're taking a domestic flight or speedboat transfer. Keep a printed confirmation or digital copy handy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Officers rarely ask for proof of funds, but having a bank statement or credit card showing available balance avoids any hassle. No specific minimum amount is published — just show you can cover your stay.Recommended
IMUGA arrival declarationMaldives' mandatory online arrival declaration at imuga.immigration.gov.mv. Complete it within 96 hours before departure. This is not a visa — all nationalities get free 30-day entry on arrival.
Online pre-registration required before travel
Complete the free IMUGA form at imuga.immigration.gov.mv within 96 hours before your departure. This is not a visa — all nationalities get a free 30-day entry on arrival. Fill it in online, save the QR code, and show it at immigration.Complete IMUGA formRequired
IMUGA saves time
Fill out the IMUGA arrival declaration online before you fly. It's free and takes 5 minutes. You'll get a QR code that lets you use the fast-track immigration queue at Velana Airport.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the Maldives. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied travel.

What happens at the border

1
Complete IMUGA declaration online
Go to imuga.immigration.gov.mv and fill out the arrival declaration. Do this 24–96 hours before your flight. You'll get a QR code — save it on your phone or print it.
2
Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There are separate queues for pre-declared passengers (faster) and those who haven't filled IMUGA. Show your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation.
3
Receive your visa stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa on arrival. No fee. No interview. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes if you have the IMUGA QR code ready.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's a duty-free shop before the exit.

Frequently asked questions

You get 30 days from the date of entry. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a 60-day extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Malé. The extension costs around 750 MVR (about €45) and takes a few days to process.
Yes, you can apply for a 60-day extension once. Visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Malé (near the artificial beach). Bring your passport, a completed extension form, and the fee (approx. 750 MVR). Processing takes 2–3 working days.
Yes, it's mandatory for all travellers entering the Maldives. Fill it out at imuga.immigration.gov.mv within 96 hours before your arrival. It's free and takes about 5 minutes. Without it, you'll be directed to a separate queue at immigration, which can take much longer.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. The Maldives requires proof of onward travel. If your plans are flexible, book a refundable ticket or a cheap onward flight to a nearby country (e.g., Sri Lanka or India).
If you're transiting through Velana International Airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport, even for a few hours, you'll need the standard visa on arrival — same requirements apply.
Yes, the visa on arrival is also available at seaports of entry, including Malé Commercial Harbour and Gan International Airport. The same rules apply: valid passport, return ticket, accommodation, and IMUGA declaration.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined 1,000 MVR (about €60) per day for the first 7 days, then 2,000 MVR per day after that. You may also be banned from re-entering the Maldives for a period. Always extend or leave before your visa expires.
