Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Julius Nyerere (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO), or Abeid Amani Karume (ZNZ) airports. Pay $50 USD for single entry (cash only, bring exact change). Have your passport photo and return ticket ready — the officer will check both before issuing the sticker.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the visa sticker. Tanzania does not enforce the 6-month rule — just needs to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity, so check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at DAR and JRO routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight or bus ticket. If you overstay, the fine is $50 USD per day paid at the airport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Officers rarely ask for hotel bookings, but having a printed reservation helps if they question your itinerary. Safari lodges and Zanzibar resorts often require a deposit anyway.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
No one checks bank statements at the border, but carry at least $200 USD in cash for the visa fee and incidentals. ATMs in Arusha and Dar es Salaam dispense Tanzanian shillings, not dollars.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in US dollars cash. ATMs are available only after you clear immigration. Bring crisp, undamaged bills — old or torn notes may be refused.
E-visa option available
You can apply for an e-visa online before travel. It costs the same ($50) and lets you skip the visa on arrival queue. Processing takes 3-5 business days.
