Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before departure
Latvian passport holders need an eVisa to enter Kenya. Apply at the official eTA portal at least 3 business days before travel. The eVisa costs around $30 USD and is valid for single entry up to 90 days.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at JKIA ask to see a confirmed onward ticket leaving Kenya. If you arrive without one, you may be refused entry or asked to buy a ticket on the spot.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Have a hotel booking or a letter of invitation ready. Officers sometimes ask for it, especially if you are staying more than a few days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during your stay.Recommended
Apply early — don't wait until the last minute
The eTA website can be slow, and processing times vary. Apply at least 7 days before your flight. If you're denied, you'll have time to fix the issue or rebook.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eTA approval, flight tickets, and hotel booking as PDFs or screenshots on your phone. Also email them to yourself. If your phone dies or gets lost, you can access them from any device.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eTA Online
Go to www.etakenya.go.ke, fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 2–3 business days, but apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.
2
Pack Your Documents
Print or save on your phone: the eTA approval email, your passport, return flight booking, and first night accommodation confirmation. Keep them together in a folder or a dedicated phone album.
3
Arrive at JKIA (Nairobi) or Moi International (Mombasa)
At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and eTA approval. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp and can proceed to baggage claim.
4
Get a Local SIM or eSIM
After clearing customs, buy a SIM from Safaricom or Airtel at the airport. Or activate an Airalo eSIM before you land — it connects the moment you touch down.
