Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
South African visa application
Apply before travel
Latvian passport holders need a visa for South Africa. Submit your application at the nearest South African embassy or consulate — processing takes 5–10 working days. The visa is single-entry and valid for up to 90 days.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 2 blank pages
Your passport needs at least 2 blank visa pages for entry stamps. South Africa does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at OR Tambo and Cape Town routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital booking confirmation ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a signed letter from your host with their address and contact number. Officers at land borders are stricter about this than at airports.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Show at least 3,000 ZAR per day of your stay, or a bank statement from the last 3 months. Credit card limits also count — have a recent statement printed.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Latvian passport holders cannot enter South Africa without a pre-approved visa. There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA. Apply well in advance.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in South Africa, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you apply.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to the official South African eVisa portal (or your nearest South African embassy if eVisa not available for your nationality). Fill in the application, upload your documents, and pay the fee. Processing takes 2–6 weeks, so apply well before your trip.
2
Gather your documents
Print or save digital copies of your visa approval, passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in a folder on your phone and a physical folder in your carry-on.
3
Arrive at OR Tambo / Cape Town / King Shaka
Most flights from Europe land at Johannesburg (JNB) or Cape Town (CPT). Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Join the queue — it can take 30–90 minutes. Have your passport, visa, and return ticket ready.
4
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and visa. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and when you leave. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor's entry.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

Processing typically takes 2–6 weeks. Apply at least a month before your trip. If you apply through an embassy (not eVisa), it can take longer.
No. The standard visitor visa is not extendable. You must leave before it expires. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Only if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Latvia is not a risk country, but if you've recently travelled to e.g. Brazil or Kenya, you'll need the certificate.
You will be denied entry and put on the next flight back. There is no visa-on-arrival for Latvian passport holders. Do not try.
South Africa's eVisa system is being rolled out gradually. Check the official eVisa portal for your nationality. If eVisa is not available, you must apply at the South African embassy in Riga or a neighbouring country.
Visa fees vary by type and embassy. Expect around €50–€80 for a single-entry tourist visa. Check the official fee schedule when you apply.
You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reason for denial (e.g. insufficient funds, missing documents). There is no formal appeal process. Consider consulting an immigration lawyer.
