What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email address. Pay the fee online with a credit or debit card. Approval usually comes within 24-72 hours, but apply at least a week before to be safe.
2
Check your email for approval
You'll receive an email with your ETA approval. Print a copy or save it on your phone — you'll need to show it at check-in and possibly on arrival. Double-check that your name and passport number match exactly.
3
Arrive at the airport in Sri Lanka
At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, head to the immigration counters. Present your passport, ETA approval, and boarding pass. The officer will stamp your passport — that's your entry. You'll get 30 days from the date of arrival.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After passing immigration, grab your luggage from the carousel and go through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're in!

Frequently asked questions

Most applications are approved within 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least a week before your flight to avoid stress. The official site is https://eta.gov.lk/ — avoid third-party sites that charge extra.
The standard ETA fee for a 30-day tourist visit is around $35–$40 USD, depending on the current rate. You pay online with a credit or debit card. Check the official ETA site for the exact amount in your currency.
No. The ETA is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave the country and reapply, or check with the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo for any special circumstances — but generally, plan for 30 days max.
Rejections are rare but can happen if there's a typo or an issue with your passport. Double-check your application. If rejected, you can reapply or contact the Sri Lanka ETA support via the official site. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have approval.
Only if you're coming from a yellow fever endemic country. Libya isn't on that list, so you won't need it for this trip. But it's always good to check current health advice before travel.
If you're staying in the airport transit area and not passing through immigration, you don't need an ETA. But if you plan to leave the airport, you must have one. Check with your airline if you're unsure.
You'll be fined per day of overstay, and it could affect future visits. The fine is typically around $25–$50 per day, payable at the airport before departure. Avoid this — set a reminder for your departure date.
