Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
US visa application
Visa required
You need a valid US visa before travel. Apply at the US embassy or consulate in Mongolia — the B-1/B-2 visitor visa is the most common. Wait times for interview appointments can be several months, so start early.Apply for US visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the US. The 6-month validity rule does not apply to US entry — just cover your travel dates.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
US immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they may deny entry without it.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your US host. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you don't have a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you can cover your expenses. There's no set minimum, but showing $200–300 per day of stay is a safe benchmark.Recommended
No visa-free entry for Mongolians
Mongolian passport holders cannot enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program. You must get a visa before you travel. There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option.
Visa interview wait times vary
In Ulaanbaatar, interview slots can fill up quickly, especially in summer. Check the U.S. Visa Information Service website for current wait times. Book as early as possible.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying your authorized stay by even one day can trigger a 3-year ban from the US. If you need more time, file Form I-539 before your I-94 expires.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the DS-160 form online
Go to ceac.state.gov and fill out the DS-160. Select 'Ulaanbaatar' as your interview location. Save the barcode number — you'll need it for the next step.
2
Pay the visa fee
Pay the $185 MRV fee. In Mongolia, you can pay at Khan Bank or via the embassy's online payment portal. Keep the receipt.
3
Schedule your interview
Log into the U.S. Visa Information Service website for Mongolia (ais.usvisa-info.com). Create an account, enter your DS-160 barcode, and pick an appointment slot. Wait times can be 2–4 months in peak season.
4
Attend the interview
Arrive at the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar (Big Ring Road, 1st Khoroo) 15 minutes early. No electronics allowed. Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo, fee receipt, and supporting documents. The officer will ask about your trip and ties to Mongolia.
5
Wait for visa processing
If approved, your passport will be held for 3–5 business days to print the visa. You'll get an SMS or email to collect it from the embassy or a designated courier.
6
Enter the US
At the US port of entry (e.g., LAX, JFK), hand over your passport with the visa. The CBP officer will ask a few questions (purpose, length of stay). They'll stamp your passport with your allowed stay — usually 6 months for B-2 visitors.
