Apply for your ETA early
Don't wait until the day before your flight. While most approvals are instant, some take up to 72 hours. If your ETA is delayed, you won't be allowed to board. Apply at least 3 business days before departure.
Biosecurity is strict
Australia has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plant material, animal products, or outdoor gear (hiking boots, camping equipment). Fines for undeclared items start at AUD 2,664. When in doubt, declare it.

Print or save digital copies of your ETA approval email, return flight booking, first night hotel confirmation, and travel insurance. Keep them in your phone or a folder in your carry-on.

Go through Australian immigration
At airports like Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), or Brisbane (BNE), use the SmartGate kiosk if eligible (e-passport holders). Scan your passport, answer a few questions on screen, and get a ticket. Hand it to the officer. If not using SmartGate, join the queue for foreign passports. Have your return ticket and accommodation ready if asked.

Collect your bags and exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. You may be selected for a random biosecurity check — declare any food, wood, or outdoor gear. Then exit into the arrivals hall.
