Visitor Visa
You need a Visitor Visa before traveling to New Zealand. Apply online through Immigration New Zealand — processing takes 20–25 days for most applicants. The visa costs $246 NZD and allows stays up to 9 months.Apply for Visitor VisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Mexican passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington airports. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or ticket to a third country ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel bookings or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked itinerary. Have hotel confirmations or a letter from your host with their address and contact number.Recommended
Proof of funds
At least $1,000 NZD per month
Immigration expects you to show $1,000 NZD per month of your stay, or $400 NZD if accommodation is prepaid. Bank statements or credit card statements from the last 3 months work best.Recommended
Apply early — processing takes weeks
New Zealand Visitor Visas for Mexican passport holders take 4–6 weeks on average. Don't book non-refundable flights or accommodation until your visa is approved.
No NZeTA for Mexican passport holders
Unlike many other nationalities, Mexican citizens cannot use the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). You must apply for a full Visitor Visa.
Biosecurity is strict — declare everything
New Zealand has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. Fines for not declaring food, plants, or outdoor gear start at NZ$400 and can go much higher. When in doubt, declare it.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Visitor Visa online
Go to the Immigration New Zealand website and create a RealMe account. Fill out the Visitor Visa application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, bank statements, itinerary), and pay the fee (around NZ$246 as of 2026). Processing takes 4–6 weeks on average.
2
Wait for visa decision
You'll get an email when your visa is approved or denied. If approved, the visa is linked electronically to your passport — no sticker or label. Print the approval letter and keep it with your travel documents.
3
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch airport
Hand your passport to the immigration officer. They'll scan it and see your approved visa in their system. You may be asked about your return ticket, accommodation, and funds. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Collect your bags and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your luggage and go through customs. New Zealand has strict biosecurity — declare any food, outdoor gear, or wooden items. Fines for not declaring can be steep.
