Mexican passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka — it's a quick online application, not a traditional visa. You'll get approval by email, usually within a couple of days, and it's valid for 30 days from arrival. Plan ahead and apply at least a few days before you fly.

Apply for Sri Lanka eVisaElectronic Travel Authorization. Apply before departure.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA / e-VisaYou must get this online approval before you fly; without it you will be denied boarding.
Apply online before travel
Mexican citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. Apply at the official Sri Lanka ETA website (https://eta.gov.lk/) at least a few days before travel. The ETA is valid for a short stay (typically 30 days) and is not extendable.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date — if it's less than 6 months away, renew it before traveling.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your Mexican passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in Sri Lanka.Required
Blank passport pagesThe immigration officer needs a clean page to stamp your passport.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank visa/stamp page for the entry stamp upon arrival in Sri Lanka.Required
Return or onward ticketHave your flight itinerary handy — you may be asked to show it at check-in or upon arrival.
Proof of departure
You must be able to show a confirmed return or onward flight ticket out of Sri Lanka, as immigration may request proof of departure.Required
Proof of fundsCarry cash, credit cards, or bank statements to show you can support yourself.
Sufficient for your stay
You should be able to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Sri Lanka. The amount is not fixed but should match your planned activities and length of stay.Recommended
Accommodation detailsKeep a copy of your booking or the address written down to show if asked.
Hotel booking or address
Immigration may ask for your accommodation address in Sri Lanka. Have your hotel booking confirmation or the address where you will stay.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccination certificateOnly needed if your travel history includes certain countries in Africa or South America.
If arriving from an affected country
If you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, you must present a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Mexico is not currently a yellow fever risk country, but this applies if you travel from an affected area.Required
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra arrival form beyond the usual immigration card.
Not required
Sri Lanka does not require a separate arrival declaration form for Mexican citizens at this time. Not required
Apply early — don't risk it
The ETA can take up to 72 hours to process. If you apply too late and it's denied or delayed, you might miss your flight. Apply at least a week before departure to be safe.
Use the official ETA site only
There are many third-party websites that look official but charge inflated fees. Always use https://eta.gov.lk/ — it's the only official government portal.
Overstaying is expensive
Overstaying your 30-day ETA results in a fine of about $25 USD per day, and you could be banned from re-entering Sri Lanka. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email address. Pay the fee (around $35–$40 USD) with a credit or debit card. Approval is usually sent by email within 24–72 hours.
2
Check your email for approval
Once approved, you'll receive an ETA approval notice. Print it or save it on your phone — you'll need to show it at check-in and possibly at immigration. Double-check that your name and passport number match exactly.
3
Arrive at the airport and go through immigration
At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, follow signs for 'Immigration' or 'Foreign Passports'. Present your passport, ETA approval, and boarding pass. The officer may ask about your stay — answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp valid for 30 days.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're in!

Frequently asked questions

Typically 24–72 hours. Apply at least 3 days before your flight to be safe. The official site is https://eta.gov.lk/ — avoid third-party sites that charge extra.
The fee is around $35–$40 USD, depending on the current exchange rate. You pay online with a credit or debit card. There may be a small processing fee added.
No, the ETA is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave the country and re-apply, or check with the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo for other options — but the standard ETA is fixed at 30 days.
Denials are rare but possible. If it happens, you'll get an email explaining why. You can reapply with corrected information or contact the Sri Lankan embassy in Mexico City for help. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have approval.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Mexico is not on that list, so if you're flying directly from Mexico, you don't need it. If you've recently been to a risk country, bring your vaccination certificate.
It's possible, but not recommended. The online ETA is faster and cheaper. On-arrival processing can involve long queues and higher fees, and you risk being turned away if there are issues. Always apply online beforehand.
You'll be fined per day of overstay (around $25 USD per day) and could face deportation or a ban. It's not worth it — keep track of your entry date and leave on time.
