Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Sri Lanka requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Sri Lanka
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Sri Lanka. A flight booking to your next destination or back home works — they want to see you leave within your visa-free or visa-on-arrival period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation ready. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least $50 USD per day in cash or have a credit card statement ready. Immigration rarely checks this for short visits, but it helps if asked.Recommended
Visa on arrival is straightforward
The process at Colombo airport is well-organized. Expect to spend 15–30 minutes at the counter. Have your documents ready to speed things up.
Passport validity is critical
If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied the visa on arrival. Check your passport now and renew if needed.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa-on-arrival counter
After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) or another entry point, follow signs to the visa-on-arrival counter. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready.
2
Fill out the arrival form
You'll receive a small form on the plane or at the counter. Fill in your personal details, flight number, and address in Sri Lanka.
3
Pay the visa fee
The fee is typically around $35–$50 USD (cash or card). Pay at the counter and get a receipt.
4
Receive your visa sticker
The officer will stamp a visa sticker into your passport. Check the validity period (usually 30 days). You're now cleared to enter.
5
Proceed to immigration
After getting the visa, go to the immigration queue. Show your passport with the visa sticker and your boarding pass. They'll stamp you in.
