Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Malaysia. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a flight out of Malaysia within your 90-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready — budget airlines at KLIA and Penang check this before issuing a boarding pass.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your first few nights. Officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least 500 USD or equivalent in cash, cards, or bank statements. Immigration rarely asks for proof, but it's a formal requirement — a quick ATM withdrawal receipt works if questioned.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Malaysia. Airlines check this before boarding. If you're even a day short, you'll be turned away.
No visa, no extension
The 90-day visa-free entry is generous but non-extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Malaysia and re-enter. Overstaying can lead to fines of about 30 MYR per day or a ban.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone.
2
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, join the foreign passport queue. Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking — have them ready.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day visit pass. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the date is correct. Keep the stamp legible; you'll need it when you leave.
4
Departure from Malaysia
When you leave, go through immigration again. They'll check your passport and stamp you out. No special forms needed.
