Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Romania
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Romania. Airlines and border officers do not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Romanian entry — just make sure it does not expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof you will leave Romania within 90 days
Immigration at Bucharest Otopeni and other Schengen entry points regularly asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy showing your departure from the Schengen area within the 90-day visa-free limit.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. A hotel confirmation email or a signed letter from a host with their address works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Romanian immigration can request evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €50 per day of stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Overstay penalties are strict
Romania enforces the 90/180-day rule strictly. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine (up to 4,000 RON / ~800 EUR) and a re-entry ban. Use a travel tracker app to monitor your days.
Romania is not yet fully in Schengen
As of 2026, Romania is partially in the Schengen area (air and sea borders only). Land borders with Bulgaria, Hungary, and other Schengen countries still have passport checks. Keep your passport handy when crossing land borders.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or save screenshots of all confirmations on your phone.
2
Arrive at Romanian border
At any Romanian airport (Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, etc.) or land border, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports. Have your passport, boarding pass, and accommodation proof ready.
3
Present documents to border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of onward travel. Answer clearly and briefly. They will stamp your passport with entry date.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Romania.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (type D) at a Romanian embassy before traveling.
If you are a Peruvian passport holder transiting through a Romanian airport to a non-Schengen country, you do not need a visa as long as you stay in the international transit area and do not enter Romania. If you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need a visa or visa-free entry.
You will be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is counted from your date of entry into Romania, not your departure date.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. Any work (paid or unpaid) or study requires the appropriate visa or permit. Working without authorization can lead to deportation and a ban.
Overstaying is a violation of Romanian immigration law. You may face a fine, deportation, and a re-entry ban of up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully — use a travel app or calendar.
If you stay in a hotel, the hotel registers you automatically. If you stay in a private residence (e.g., with friends or family), you must register with the local immigration office (Inspectoratul General pentru Imigrări) within 3 days of arrival. Failure to register can result in a fine.
Yes. Romania accepts valid Schengen visas for short stays (up to 90 days). However, as a Peruvian passport holder, you already have visa-free access, so a Schengen visa is not needed unless you plan to visit other Schengen countries.
