Filipino passport holders need an approved Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) before flying to Australia. This is not a visa on arrival — you must apply and receive approval online before boarding. As of 2026, the ETA is valid for 12 months and allows multiple visits of up to 3 months each.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa (ETA) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
You must apply for an ETA before boarding your flight to Australia. Download the official Australian ETA app (free on iOS/Android) — third-party websites charge extra fees. The $20 AUD fee is paid in-app, and approval usually comes within seconds.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Australia
Your Philippine passport must be valid for the whole time you plan to be in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the visit
Have bank statements or a credit card ready to show you have enough money for your stay. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if you look underprepared.Recommended
Apply for your ETA at least 48 hours before your flight
While approval is often instant, it can take up to 12 hours. Don't wait until you're at the airport — you won't be allowed to board without an approved ETA.
Australia's biosecurity laws are strict
Declare all food, plant material, animal products, and cash over AUD 10,000. Fines for undeclared items can reach AUD 2,664 or more. If in doubt, declare it.
SmartGate kiosks speed up entry
At major airports like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, you can use SmartGate kiosks if your passport has a chip. Just scan your passport, answer a few questions, and get a ticket. No need to queue for an officer unless you're flagged.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Download the Australian ETA app (iOS/Android) or use the Department of Home Affairs website. Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and answer a few health and character questions. Pay the AUD 20 fee (about PHP 750). Approval is usually instant, but allow up to 12 hours.
2
Check in at the airport in Manila
At NAIA or any Philippine airport, present your passport and ETA approval email at the check-in counter. The airline will verify your ETA is valid. They may also ask for your return ticket and proof of accommodation.
3
Arrive at an Australian airport
You'll land at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passenger Processing'. Have your passport and ETA approval ready. You'll use the SmartGate kiosk (if eligible) or see an officer. The officer may ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and funds.
4
Collect your luggage and clear customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Then proceed to customs. Declare any food, plant material, animal products, or cash over AUD 10,000. Australia has strict biosecurity laws — penalties for undeclared items can be severe.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) before you fly. It's not a visa on arrival. Apply online via the Australian ETA app or the Department of Home Affairs website. The fee is AUD 20 (about PHP 750). Approval is usually instant but can take up to 12 hours.
You can stay up to 3 months per visit. The ETA itself is valid for 12 months from the date of approval, and you can enter multiple times within that year. Each stay cannot exceed 3 months.
No. The ETA does not allow extensions. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa (like a Visitor visa, subclass 600) before your ETA expires. Overstaying can lead to a ban from re-entering Australia.
Denials are rare but can happen if you have a criminal record, a previous visa overstay, or health issues. You'll receive a letter explaining the reason. You can reapply with corrected information or apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) which has a more thorough review process.
Yes. Australian immigration requires proof that you intend to leave before your ETA expires. A return or onward ticket is mandatory. Keep a screenshot of your booking on your phone.
You must apply for a new ETA linked to your new passport. The old ETA is tied to the old passport number and cannot be transferred. Apply for a new ETA at least 24 hours before your flight.
No. The ETA is for tourism, visiting family, or short business trips (like meetings or conferences). You cannot work for an Australian employer or enroll in a course longer than 3 months. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa.
