Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket within 30 days. Budget airlines at KLIA and Penang are strict about this — have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with friends or family, carry their address and phone number — immigration may ask for it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Carry at least 1,000 MYR (about 240 USD) in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Immigration rarely asks, but they can deny entry if you cannot support yourself.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before letting you board. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to fly. Double-check your passport's expiry date before booking anything.
Overstaying costs money and time
Overstaying even by a day means a fine of RM 10 per day, paid at immigration before you leave. For longer overstays, you may be detained and deported. Set a reminder on your phone a few days before your 30 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you queue
Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or printed), and accommodation booking ready. At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), immigration queues can be long — having everything in hand speeds things up.
2
Approach the foreign passport counter
At KLIA, look for the 'Foreign Passport' lanes. Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 30 days). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct. Keep the stamp legible for your departure.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and pass through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green lane. Keep your passport handy — you may need to show it again at the exit.
