Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry into Thailand. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Budget airlines like AirAsia and Nok Air check this before issuing a boarding pass. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight within 60 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works. Not always checked, but saves time if asked.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
Thailand's official requirement is 20,000 THB in cash or traveler's cheques per person, or 40,000 THB per family. Credit cards and bank statements are not accepted — bring physical cash in THB or a major currency like USD or EUR.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)Thailand Digital Arrival Card — a free 2-minute online pre-registration at tdac.immigration.go.th. Not mandatory, but gets you through the immigration queue faster.
Optional online pre-registration
TDAC is a free 2-minute form at tdac.immigration.go.th. Fill it out before your flight and you'll get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at immigration. Not mandatory, but cuts your queue time significantly at busy airports.Register on TDACOptional
Overstay penalties are real
Overstaying even one day costs 500 THB per day. If you overstay more than 90 days, you face a 1-year ban from Thailand. Set a reminder to leave on time.
TDAC saves time at immigration
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free and optional, but filling it out online before you fly can cut your queue time significantly. Do it at tdac.immigration.go.th.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before flying
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and ensure at least one blank page. Book your return or onward ticket. Reserve your first night's accommodation. Optionally complete the TDAC online. Print or save digital copies of everything.
2
Arrive at the airport in Thailand
At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), or Chiang Mai (CNX), follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'.
3
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking. Answer questions calmly. They'll stamp your passport with a 60-day visa-free entry.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then customs. You're free to enter Thailand.
